Welcome to Champaign, Illinois.
Champaign is located in central Illinois northeast of Decatur in Champaign County along Interstate 72. It lies just north of the headwaters of the Kaskaskia River and the Embarras River. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 67,518. Champaign lies very close to the city of Urbana, Illinois and this has given to area being referred together as Urbana-Champaign or even Chambana. Urbana was founded in 1822 and Champaign was founded in 1854. The University of Illinois has its home here, being situated convienently between the two cities. The University has the distinction of ten Nobel Prize winners and many Pulitzer Prizes (2002).
This area is also known affectionately as 'Silicon Prairie' due to the technology companies and centers that have made the two cities their home. There are a number of large technology and software companies in the area, mainly in The Research Park which is located in the South of Champaign.
Abraham Lincoln was a regular visitor during the 1850 to see friends' homes.

When visiting the area make sure you see Allerton Park's forests, gardens, sculptured hedges and statuary; prairie flora at the Arboretum and Mabery Gelvin Botanical Garden and the Olympic Tribute, a monument honoring county athletes.
The Champaign Municipal Building is the City Hall, Court House, and several other buildings merged into one great landmark. Often considered the central landmark of Champaign and the most visible building in the downtown district the Municipal building is something of a city symbol and local tourist attraction. The image of this building is therefore seen in the city seal, police cars, and many branded logos and marketing brochures of the area.
Champaign, Illinois is known for its extensive city parks, which are enjoyed by both visitors and residents alike.
